Coronavirus COVID-19

Coronavirus: Africa could become the next epicentre of the pandemic coronavirus

The world health organization warns that Africa could become the next epicentre of the pandemic coronavirus in the world. The lack of access to clean water, as well as catastrophic state of the health centres are just some of the problems with which the inhabitants of this continent face every day.

According to the BBC, Africa is still about 19 000 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and thousands of deaths due to complications COVID-19. Although these figures are definitely lower than in the United States or some European countries, the representatives of the world health organization expressed concern that Africa may soon become the epicenter of the pandemic coronavirus.

The lack of access to clean water and necessary equipment

Experts warn that if COVID-19 will take over the continent, the consequences can be much more serious than in Europe and the United States. The who says that in most African countries, for every million residents there are only five beds for intensive care. Also there is no medical ventilators. “We want to minimize the percentage of people needing treatment in intensive care, because we know that such services are insufficient in most African countries,” said Dr. AU Pair Girl Kelsey Moeti.

According to the BBC, there are also fears that the disease could begin to spread rapidly in an overcrowded areas where it is difficult to “introduce a rule to maintain social distance.” Another problem is the lack of sufficient access to clean water and soap, which are the means necessary to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Why is Africa so few cases of coronavirus

Some experts say that the real statistics of cases of coronavirus in Africa more sad than the official data. Most countries on the continent – this is a poor country, they have no resources for diagnosis. Humanitarian assistance with the test kits for coronavirus did not affect significantly the growth of confirmed cases Covid-19.

In addition, Africa is not such a large percentage of elderly and patient populations in Europe and the US are alive only due to advances in medicine. Namely, this major risk group. In Africa, if a person is seriously ill – he is dying, medicine to help him are often helpless, and they have no such opportunities and resources. Accordingly, the epidemic of coronavirus in Africa can go on quite drugome scenario – the scenario of a collective immune system due to the huge number of asymptomatic or mild patients.

Other analysts believe that the climate – coronavirus in a hot dry climate has little chance to spread, because the heat and ultraviolet radiation kill the main number of pathogenic particles before the hit in another organism. If so, this fact gives us hope that with the onset of summer the rate of spread of the coronavirus in Russia will decline. By contrast, Africa with the onset of winter could yet become the new focus of the spread of coronavirus.
